Born in London's Acton neighborhood in 1986, Harington made his acting debut with the lead role of Albert Narracott in the acclaimed 2008 West End production of War Horse. After starring in another English play called Posh, he landed his television debut as Jon Snow in HBO's Game of Thrones, which ran for eight seasons and singlehandedly elevated his career to A-list status. Adam B. Vary described the film as "unquestionably a ChloƩ Zhao movie", but wished more action set pieces were featured in the teaser to see how Zhao would approach them in the film.
Upon release, the teaser quickly became the number one trending video on YouTube and amassed 77 million global views in its first 24 hours. We now have our first look at Game of Thrones star Kit Harington in Eternals. On Monday, Marvel Studios released a new poster and Eternals teaser trailer for the superhero movie ahead of its premiere in theaters in November.
Featuring a large ensemble cast, Eternals will mark Harington's debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Dane Whitman, the man who becomes Black Knight. If you missed it, you can see a look at him in the new trailer below. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige said in April 2018 that the studio was actively developing a film based on the Marvel Comics series Eternals, created by Jack Kirby, to release as part of their Phase Four slate of films. Marvel Studios had met with multiple screenwriters, and was believed to be focusing on the character Sersi in the film.
Marvel set Ryan and Kaz Firpo to write the script a month later, with their outline including a love story between the characters Sersi and Ikaris. In June, Feige said Marvel was interested in exploring the "ancient aliens kind of sci-fi trope" by having the Eternals be the inspiration for myths and legends throughout the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe . THRhas reported that "one aspect to the story involves the love story between Ikaris, a man fueled by cosmic energy, and Sersi, who relishes moving amongst humans," so things might be about to get awkward between Robb Stark and Jon Snow.
All this mystery surrounding Harrington's inclusion inEternalshas drawn a lot of speculations about his role. Because the Black Knight is actually a mortal in the comics, he is not part of the alien superhero team. As such, Harington may not be a major presence in the upcoming movie. Instead, many fans believe that it will merely introduce his character to make way for future films and even a possible solo outing. After all, casting theGame of Thronesstar is a huge deal given his massive fanbase.
Given all these clues, it seems that Marvel intends to keep Harington's role a heavily guarded secret for an exciting reason. Besides Kit Harington, it stars Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, Richard Madden, Gemma Chan, Kumail Nanjiani among others in pivotal parts. Disney also recently revealed that Eternals will not be following a hybrid release format, and will be only be available to watch in theatres. The studio is currently embroiled in a legal tussle with Black Widow star Scarlett Johansson, who recently sued Disney for releasing her standalone Marvel film simultaneously on the OTT platform Disney Plus. The actor claimed that the film's box office performance suffered a setback as a result of that decision.
Kit Harington'sEternals character is an important part of Phase 4 and the Marvel Cinematic Universe's future. The upcoming MCU movie directed by ChloƩ Zhao features one of Marvel's best ensembles to date. Gemma Chan and Richard Madden play the two lead roles, Sersi and Ikaris, and they are surrounded by Angelina Jolie, Kumail Nanjiani, Salma Hayek, Brian Tyree Henry, and many more playing Marvel's powerful Eternals team. One of the biggest names inEternals' cast is formerGame of Thrones star Kit Harington.
Harington has been cast as the Black Knight and Madden is set to play Ikaris. They may have both been on Game of Thrones, but they rarely shared a scene. With Madden's character killed off in season 3, the last time they were in a scene together was when Jon Snow headed off for The Wall in the second episode of the series.
The film tells the story of immortal, godlike beings with superpowers living among humans while they await the return of the Celestials as they fight against their foes, the Deviants, in a war that began millions of years ago, reports Deadline. Marvel considered Eternals to be a perfect transition into its next phase of films along with projects such as Captain Marvel , allowing the studio to cast a diverse group of actors to portray the various Eternals. Moore's initial planning documents for the project including the swapping of genders, sexualities, and ethnicities of some characters from the comic books, with Zhao further advocating for this approach. In February 2019, Feige reiterated that Marvel was interested in the Eternals due to Kirby's epic, century-spanning story, with the film version spanning 7,000 years and exploring humanity's place in the cosmos.
Zhao noted that the Eternals "have lived among us for so long, the same struggles like identity, purpose, faith, personal freedom versus greater good — all the duality and flaws that make us human". When trying to develop a story that spanned so many years, Marvel realized that the characters would likely be a family unit, with friendship that would "turn into frenemies, and then turn into enemies, and then come back to friendship". Zhao also looked to the Earth as an eleventh character in the film, chronicling its journey along side the Eternal characters. Marvel also wanted to create more ensemble films that were not crossover films, like Guardians of the Galaxy , while introducing relatively unknown characters to audiences as they did with that film's title characters and the Avengers.
While Eternals hasn't even come out yet, it's easy to speculate on the future of this character based on the long history, and the ascending status of the person playing him. Harington is a big actor, and after Thrones he's only getting more famous. And as he showed in the 2005 HBO film Seven Days in Hell, he's actually funny, too; if Harington's role in Eternals is well-received, it would be a very on-brand move for the MCU to develop a solo Black Knight film or Disney+ series. At the very least, we would expect to see him pop up as a supporting character in future movies—that is, if he survives Eternals first. Besides Kit Harington, it stars Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, Richard Madden, Gemma Chan, Kumail Nanjiani amongst others in pivotal components.
Disney additionally just lately revealed that Eternals won't be following a hybrid release format, and will likely be solely be out there to observe in theatres. The studio is presently embroiled in a legal tussle with Black Widow star Scarlett Johansson, who just lately sued Disney for releasing her standalone Marvel movie concurrently on the OTT platform Disney Plus. The actor claimed that the movie's field workplace efficiency suffered a setback on account of that call. Marvel released a new trailer and a new poster for their upcoming superhero movie Eternals on Thursday. The trailer offered no new glimpse at actor Harish Patel but the poster has a surprise treat for his fans.
Eternals is considered to be one of the more unique comic book stories in Marvel's catalogue and if the first trailer is anything to go by , the film will follow through on that promise. Now things have gotten even more exciting with the release of Eternals' final trailer. But no matter what the future holds for the Eternals, it seems safe to say that Dane Whitman will be sticking around the MCU for some time.
It's unlikely Marvel would cast an actor as well-established as Harington in a small, one-off supporting role – and it's additionally unlikely they'd do so little with a character this important to the comics. Eternals is scheduled to be released in the United States on November 5, 2021. It was previously set for release on November 6, 2020, before it was shifted to February 12, 2021, and then to the November 2021 date, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In September 2021, Variety reported that Disney was expected to use the box office performance of Black Widow and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings to determine the release strategy for Eternals, which Disney had been "curiously vague" about.
In January 2021, Zhao revealed that she was also a writer on the film, with Patrick Burleigh soon revealed to have worked on the script as well. Additional filming occurred in Los Angeles in early February, also under the working title Sack Lunch. Tichenor said Zhao usually edits her own films and has "strong opinions", but on Eternals she was relying on Tichenor and Wood due to the size of the production and the ongoing awards season for Nomadland. Tichenor added that Zhao respected the pair's editing experience and point of view, and they made their first cut of the film without much input from her. They began adjusting the film based on Zhao's feedback, and were still working on the editing in April 2021.
At the end of the month, Zhao said editing for the film was in its "final stretch", and Jashaun St. John was revealed to appear in the film, after previously starring in Zhao's film Songs My Brothers Taught Me . At the 2019 San Diego Comic-Con, Feige officially announced The Eternals with a release date of November 6, 2020. He officially announced the casting of Jolie as Thena, Nanjiani as Kingo, Lee as Gilgamesh, Madden as Ikaris, and Hayek as Ajak, along with Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, and Lia McHugh as Sprite. Zhao looked for actors for each role that could "find a bit of themselves in their character". Feige added that one of these actors was portraying an LGBTQ character, with actor Haaz Sleiman later revealing that Phastos is depicted as gay in the film.
Sleiman portrays the character's husband, and the pair have a child in the film. Sleiman felt it was important to depict "how loving and beautiful a queer family can be" rather than the "sexual or rebellious" depiction in some previous media. Feige said the relationship was "always sort of inherent in the story" and he felt it was "extremely well done" in the film, while Sleiman said it was a "thoughtful" depiction. An Eternal who can project cosmic energy projectiles from his hands. Enamored with fame, Kingo becomes a popular Bollywood film star to blend in on Earth.
Nanjiani wanted his performance to combine the wisecracking attitude of John McClane from the Die Hard film series with the look of Bollywood actor Hrithik Roshan. He studied Errol Flynn films and some of the original Zorro films to prepare for the role. Nanjiani, who is not a dancer, found learning the Bollywood dances challenging. In April 2018, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige announced that a film based on the Eternals had begun development, with Ryan and Kaz Firpo hired to write the script in May.
Zhao was set to direct the film by late September, and was given freedom to use her own style when making the film such as filming on location more than previous Marvel Studios films. Zhao re-wrote the screenplay, which Burleigh was later revealed to have also contributed to. Starting in March 2019, a diverse cast was hired to portray the Eternals, which include the depiction of a gay superhero.
Principal photography took place from July 2019 to February 2020, at Pinewood Studios as well as on location in London and Oxford, England, and in the Canary Islands. While the release of the highly-anticipated Marvel movie Eternals is still some time away, everyone is already excited about what the movie will have to offer MCU's diehard fans. But no one more than maybe Eternals actor and Game of Thrones star Kit Harington. While speaking with Movieweb, the actor stated that he is a huge fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and is excited about watching the final cut. In the comics, Sersi and Dane are part of the Avengers at the same time, and are romantically linked.
A villain named Proctor shows up and drives Sersi to create a mental life bond, known as gann josin to the Eternals, with Dane. Meanwhile, Dane has started to develop feelings for his other Avengers teammate, Inhuman Crystal, which makes things awkward. To add insult to injury, it turns out Proctor, the villain who caused Sersi mental distress in the first place, is actually an alternate universe version of Dane Whitman possessed by the Ebony Blade.
And that, folks, is why you only create a mental link with committed partners and not casual romantic interests. Dane's encounter with the Eternals and Deviants may be what pushes him toward his future as Black Knight. Whether through necessity or by discovery, he could soon learn the truth about his lineage, obtain the powerful Ebony Blade sword, and accept the curse tying him to the weapon in following his comic book arc. In the comics, Dane is the nephew of Marvel's original Black Knight, Nathan Garrett, who was a major Avengers villain. Once Dane received the Ebony Blade and its powers, his time as Black Knight saw him ditch the mantle's villainous past to become a hero.
The Avengers finally accepted him as a true ally once Dane helped fight Kang the Conqueror, who is now in the MCU. SinceLoki introduced He Who Remains, a variant of Kang, Harington's Black Knight could be among the many MCU characters who eventually fight the time-traveling conqueror. Next, Feige jumped over to the brand new property primed to become a cornerstone of Phase 4, The Eternals. You'll recall that this movie already boasted a stellar cast, starring Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Don Lee, Brian Tyree Henry, Lauren Ridloff, and Lia McHugh. At D23, Feige announced three additions to the heavy-hitting lineup. Gemma Chan will play human-loving Sersi, Barry Keoghan will play loner Druig, and Kit Harington will play Dane Whitman, a non-Eternal.
Of course, the casting news means that Harington and Madden will be reunited on the big screen for another epic adventure years after their time together on Game of Thrones came to an end. Eternals has a massive cast of characters, most of which are beings that have been around longer than the human race. And of course there's Zhao, the reigning Best Director winner at the Academy Awards, who is known for very intimate films that don't share much DNA with the movies of the MCU. The bonkers final trailer for Edgar Wright's Last Night In Soho is here. Along with the final trailer, Marvel Studios released the official poster for their latest superhero ensemble film Eternals.
Listed in the poster are Gemma Chan , Richard Madden , Kumail Nanjiani , Lia McHugh , Brian Tyree Henry , Lauren Ridloff , Barry Keoghan , Ma Dong-seok/Don Lee , Kit Harington , Salma Hayek , and Angelina Jolie . The poster shows them all in their superhero regalia looking off into the horizon. Featuring a star-studded cast of Natalie Portman, Jacob Tremblay, Susan Sarandon, and Kathy Bates, this 2019 Canadian drama film stars Harington in its titular role. Covering themes of celebrity, tabloid culture, mother-son relationships, and homosexuality, the movie follows a child actor who exchanged letters with a troubled established actor through his unfortunate death. Popthrill is an entertainment and pop-culture news source built and managed by like-minded folks who are fans of comic book movies, pop-culture, science fiction, etc.
However, the film could still give fans Black Knight's origin story. That'd be in keeping with early rumors surrounding Eternals, which suggest that Dane won't be seen with the Black Knight's iconic Ebony Blade until the very end of its runtime. This wouldn't be the first time that Marvel has used one of its films as a launchpad for an important supporting character. Gemma Chan and Barry Keoghan were in talks to join the cast in August 2019. Chan previously portrayed Minn-Erva in Captain Marvel, but reports noted that she was potentially being looked at by Marvel to play a separate character in this film. Since Minn-Erva dies in that film, Chan had felt that it was unlikely she would return to the MCU, but after working on the film she was told by Feige that the studio wanted to "make better use" of her in a future project.
This led to Chan auditioning for Sersi, one of the last actresses to be considered for the role. Chan later described Sersi as the most difficult role for the film to cast. Chan and Keoghan were confirmed to be cast in the film at the D23 Expo in August, in the roles of Sersi and Druig, respectively, along with Kit Harington as Dane Whitman.
Chan said she and Marvel Studios were surprised by how soon after Captain Marvel her new MCU role came, with both assuming that it would have been a project further in the future. And of course there's Zhao, the reigning Best Director winner at the Academy Awards, who is known for very intimate films that don't share much DNA with the movies of the MCU. He joined Screen Rant in late 2016 following a year-long stint with MCU Exchange, which came after first developing an MCU blog of his own. He graduated college in 2016 with a Bachelor's degree in Media & Public Communication, with a minor in Media Production. Cooper's love for movies began by watching Toy Story and Lion King on repeat as a child, but it wasn't until The Avengers that he took an invested interest in movies and the filmmaking process, leading him to discover the world of film journalism.
Every year Cooper looks forward to seeing the latest blockbusters from the likes of Marvel, DC, and Star Wars, but also loves the rush to catch up on Oscar films near the end of the year. When he isn't writing about or watching new releases, Cooper is a fantasy football obsessive and looking to expand his Blu-Ray collection – because physical media is still king! The introduction of Black Knight inEternalsalso comes at a time when the MCU is expanding its magical and supernatural footprint. The Ebony Blade's magical properties mean Harington could return inDoctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness to help protect the world from another massive threat. This appearance might even be the latest step Marvel takes to building a proper Defenders team.
It could even be through here that Black Knight's time in another universe as the leader of UltraForce can be achieved. Harington could also appear as Black Knight inSecret Invasion, just as Dane Whitman did in the comics. The trailers forEternalsdefinitely keep his exact role secretive, but fans of Harington should not doubt that he's important to MCU Phase 4.
